Atienza has made himself somewhat of a fashion icon with his signature floral shirts. He says "floral prints make the world brighter and more colorful. It affects not only your mood but also your work ethic, your behavior and your well-being. We are in a tropical country and isn't it the most fitting style for us?"
Atienza has been hosting TV Program Maynila on GMA 7 since 1998 only taking breaks during election season when he runs for office. His children take over during these times.

He founded a number of social devlopment programs and charities. He started "Mahal ko si Lolo, Mahal ko si Lola" foundation in 1976 and "Home for the Angels," a home for abandoned and abused infants, in 1992.
During his term as the local chief executive of Manila, he banned distribution of contraceptives in the city's heath facilities. Known for his being "pro-life", Atienza's opposition to contraceptives is well publicized and criticized.
He is called the "butcher of Arroceros" after ordering Arroceros Park in Manila closed in 2003 to make way for construction.
Atienza was responsible for the tearing down of the historical Jai Alai stadium along Taft. Conservationists hit him for being inconsiderate of the landmark's heritage value despite him being an Architecture student.
