PEACE AND SECURITY

Campaigned for the withdrawal of US military bases in the Philippines; helped set up several regional coalitions on denuclearisation, demilitarisation, and developing a security plan based on people’s needs; he was a leading voice from the South urging the USA not to resort to military intervention; led the peace mission to the southern Philippine island of Basilan, where the US army recently sent their special forces; participated in the peace mission of Asian parliamentarians and civil society activists to Baghdad to stop US invasion of Iraq.

Education

HUMAN RIGHTS

A key figure in the international movement to restore democracy in the Philippines; co-ordinated the Anti-Martial Law Coalition and the Philippines Human Rights Lobby in Washington, DC; publicized human rights abuses in th Philippines; published a book that contributed to a citizen's movement that deposed Marcos in 1986
