The Philippines is now experiencing severe environmental degradation — mainly in the form of deforestation, soil erosion, disruption of hydrological systems, overexploitation of fisheries, destruction of coral reefs and extinction of species. These problems are accentuated by the pressures of a large, fast-growing and impoverished population, and aggravated by climatic change due to the global 'greenhouse effect'. Moreover, environmental degradation leads to adverse economic consequences that threaten the Philippines's prospects for sustainable development in the years ahead.

Reviving Peace Talks with CPP-NPA

Respectfully, I am asking President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider his decision to reopen the negotiations with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines. I believe the insurgency problem can only be ended peacefully if the NDFP and the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army, are sincere, honest, and committed to working toward the direction of peace and reciprocate the gesture offered by the government. But there are no indications at all that they are willing to negotiate for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. History will also tell us that the communist movement is not to be trusted as they have consistently shown us their deep-seated proclivity to sow hate, violence and extremism, destruction, and senseless killings. These are groups motivated by the desire to overthrow the government and rule the nation. For them, peace is not an option. And that’s because they are terrorists. We maintain our position that we are not supposed to negotiate with terrorists, but deal with them the way we should — tough, strong, high intensity, and one that gathers all sectors to completely crush their influence in communities where they are present.

The history of Davao has been marred by senseless and violent terrorist acts that have cost the lives of Davaoeños. It is a painful reminder as we continue to strive for the peace and security of Davao and the people. The presence of domestic and foreign terrorist threats in our country continues to undermine our peace and democracy even as we are in our most vulnerable state.

September 2021

The Philippines is now experiencing severe environmental degradation — mainly in the form of deforestation, soil erosion, disruption of hydrological systems, overexploitation of fisheries, destruction of coral reefs and extinction of species. These problems are accentuated by the pressures of a large, fast-growing and impoverished population, and aggravated by climatic change due to the global 'greenhouse effect'. Moreover, environmental degradation leads to adverse economic consequences that threaten the Philippines's prospects for sustainable development in the years ahead.

Resumption of Face-to-face Classes

It was discussed during the vaccine cluster reporting earlier that they will also include the vaccination of the five schools that were submitted for the pilot face-to-face classes of the Department of Education (DepEd). So they will seek permission for that, whether or not there is comorbidity but they were selected to be the pilot schools. Only fully vaccinated teachers and non-teaching staff would be allowed in the pilot schools.

Federalism

I am not for federalism, but, I say, decision 'yan ng Congress, decision 'yan ng President natin. Ang Mindanao is an area na mayroong 'kingdoms' ang mga local politicians, local warlords. I do not think na tama ibigay ang mas malaking powers kapag ganoon ang set-up ng isang lugar. Kasi baka mag-worsen ang situation ng mga lugar, especially sa mga lugar na hindi pa ready na tumanggap ng dagdag na responsibilities or dagdag na power ang mga local officials.

Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination

The government did not make it mandatory—ang vaccination, therefore, people were given a choice kung magpabukuna sila or hindi. Itong mga pumili na hindi magpabakuna, they should not be discriminated.

Legalization of marijuana use for medical and scientific purposes

Sa tingin ko naman if there is scientific basis na ang cannabis ay gamot, dapat siguro hindi natin ipagkait yun sa mga pasyente na nangangailangan talaga ng ganoong gamot. So, best if it’s regulated by the government if there is really scientific and medical basis na nakaka-heal 'yun ng mga sakit ng mga tao.
